Bolero is one of the five competitive dances in American Rhythm ballroom dance category and very popular on the social dance floor also. It is generally thought to be a very romantic and sensual dance due to the melodic and expressive aspect of the styling and the music which bears the same name.
Like the other Rhythm dances (e.g., Cha Cha, Rumba, Mambo, East Coast Swing), the Bolero employs Cuban hip motion. However, it distinguishes itself by also having rise and fall and contra body movement, like the Waltz. The tempo is significantly slower than the American Rhythm Rumba and about the same as the International Latin Rumba.
Due to the expressive styling and the rise and fall, the Bolero has a very smooth, powerful, and passionate look and feel that distinguishes it from the Rumba.
